Random Musings on far too little sleep
It's not even 7am in the morning; we landed about forty minutes early and customs appears to be non-existent. It's bizzarre compared to my admittedly limited travels overseas previously (namely Brisbane Airport & Auckland Airport). A brief wait to have my passport stamped (yay! another stamp!) and then the arrows for 'Nothing to Declare' lead you out to the shops & exit. No x-rays or luggage checks or anything. What a friendly place :P
Conveniently, the McDonalds next to the people who will transport me to my hotel offer free internet access as long as you only stay on for a little while. It's almost enough to make me want to buy their food type products in gratitude....almost.
I still can't believe that I'm in a foreign country. Since all the signs are in English so far and the exchange rate is almost 1:1 I suppose that's not hideously surprising. That and I'm just tired :P I was already sleepy when I hit the airport and sleeping the flight away sounded like an easy plan to begin with. Until of course I discovered that the flight was full, there were no aisle seats left and no room whatsoever to spread out. My legs kept grumbling but I swear that it was my bum starting to go numb that was worse. My single-serve friend seated next to me was an almost elderly gentleman named Gary. Gary's going to India to teach Bible Studies for two weeks. The gentleman on my other side didn't introduce himself and I was too tired to bother him for introductions! They both slept the whole flight almost. So, to stretch my legs I had to carefully and dextrously hike my incredibly long skirt and try to step over Gary into the aisle...which of course then brings up the whole Flight Club conundrum.
I've decided that investing in one of those neck pillows is wise as is winning lotto and going in Business Class. I like double beds, have a tendency to spread out and to cuddle my cat/teddy bear/snuggly blanket etc... This is notoriously difficult in a plane. Mind you, by about 5am NZ time I was having to resist rolling over and snuggling up to the shoulder of the random guy next to me. I swear that's what shoulders are for. Nick you are so coming next time so that I can use you as a snuggly airplane pillow!
Singapore Airlines are fairly decent thought. Good food; no crying babies; some free stuff (not that I need miniature toothpaste but the student in me just couldn't leave it behind); and through the window in the corridor you can see the stars.
A few thank you's while I remember as well. Thank you Mum for doing all my washing for the last couple of weeks. I promise not to bring more than a suitcase worth back with me :P Thank you Dad for giving up your study for me to sleep in and for not complaining that I kept forgetting to hook your pc up after using mine. Thank you both (and my bro) for looking after my cat. Please give him lots of cuddles for me! Thank you Benn, Anna & Sri for offering me a room at their place whenever needed. I'm sorry for being half asleep and distracted at the game Benn! I want to hear how the hit goes down next week!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANNA!!!!!!!!
Thank you Nick for far too many things to publish in a public place (cause I know they'll make Anna grimace at being far too cutesy although I know she secretly likes it. Or likes us being happy & you do make so so happy.)
Thank you to Dad, Anna, Julie, Mira & everyone else who has reccommended places for me to go visit!
Oh!! I have a job! I haven't had a chance to tell everyone since I only found out a day or so before flying out. I'm working in an upmarket residential pub in Chelsea in Central London. This makes everything within walking distance or one a very short one tube ride (tube? underground? whichever's the right term for London). 35 hrs per week, two days off, free accom. and good money for food and touring. Yay!!
Alright, I'm not sure I can stand too much longer of the Ronald McDonald statue staring at me in far too bright plastic colours. I'm off to explore Singapore!
love to all,
Nicky
